WHAT WE DO
Educo is a global development and humanitarian action NGO based in Barcelona, Spain with over 25-year experience working in 14 countries. Since 1999, we have been implementing Education and Development programme in Bangladesh in the marginalized urban and rural areas and with time we expanded our works to broader geographical areas. Currently, we are working in 11 districts of the country.
Actions:
At present, Educo Bangladesh works in 11 Districts across the country, namely Dhaka, Thakurgaon, Vashanchar, Moulvibazar, Cox’s Bazar, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Shariatpur, Barisal, Barguna, Satkhira
EDUCO Bangladesh aims to empower children to express their views, ideas and opinions, and to exercise leadership. At the same time, EDUCO works with duty bearers, especially parents and local government institutions (Union Parishad), to create an enabling environment for children where they can influence the decisions that affect them.
Our major projects include: Community-based Early Childhood Development (ECD), Strengthening Child-Friendly learning environment, Child Friendly community, Promoting Quality Education in Government Primary Schools (GPS) at Bhaluka and Reduction of hazardous child labor in urban areas and Fulfillment of the Rights of the Children.

Our current projects
Goal: People who are likely to be displaced and people who have already been displaced are parallelly protected with knowledge, skills, resilient income options and basic services provided by authorities and other actors.
Location: 05 Slums (Bakal Islampur-01, Bakal Islampur-2, Puraton Ghosh Para Colony, Sardar Para Colony and Dokkhin Kamalnagar colony) under Satkhira Municipality and 03 Unions (Paddapukur, Gabura and Burigoalini) in Shyamnagar Sub-district of Satkhira
Project brief: Amid rising global temperatures and increasingly challenging physical environments, climate change is driving a growing number of people displaced by the adverse effects of climate change and environmental degradation. This project focuses on the south west region of Bangladesh, where it aims to equip communities facing climate change with the knowledge, skills, and access to finance and services to mitigate some of the worst impacts of climate change. This project is being implemented through funding provided by the EU Lives in Dignity (LiD) Grant Facility.
Scope and objectives:
Satkhira Municipality, in Bangladesh’s southwest had a population of 113,322 in 2011. By 2018, that population had risen to 169,991, a number that continues to grow as a result of people fleeing from areas severely impacted by ever-strengthening cyclones – which can leave land under water for as much as half the year. As the land gets repurposed for shrimp farms and the salinity of the land increases, its agricultural productivity falls, leading to rising unemployment and negative economic impacts for the local community. As these communities move off the land and into urban areas, most find refuge in urban slums, where women face an increased likelihood of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). While the rights of women are growing in Bangladesh as a whole, in poorer coastal regions at the coalface of climate change, women still face unequal distribution of power, poor economic conditions, a lack of opportunities and limited access to facilities such as Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).
The project is being implemented in two locations in Satkhira districts, 03 unions in Shyamnager sub-districts, and 05 slums of Satkhira Municipality. As direct beneficiaries, the project includes 3500 population in 697 Households in slum areas of the municipality and 3500 in 3 unions of the Shyamnager sub-district. Following are the supports; the project intends to provide during its two-year duration.
This project aims to assist slum dwellers, primarily women, in Satkhira Municipality with the skills and technical and financial support to capitalize on viable income-generating options. The project will also address limited access to basic services in the slums, and will seek to bolster education, water and sanitation services, while reducing the presence of water-borne diseases. This project will also seek to address the root causes of displacement, enhancing measures aimed at prevention, protection and providing solutions for those communities at risk of being displaced from the coastal region, as well as working with slum-dwelling communities to mitigate their risk of being impacted by future climate shocks.
Expected results:
Increased income generation and livelihood opportunities for displacement affected persons
- 390 participants have increased skills and viable income-generating opportunities through technical and financial support.
Increased access for displacement affected persons to quality and integrated basic services
- Representatives of five Climate Migrant Rights Group (CMRG) and one Climate Migrant Rights Federation (CMRF) are active in claiming their rights as slum dwellers.
- Increased children’s enrolment in primary school through creating access and improving WASH & quality education to the national primary education system.
- Reduced cases of the water-borne disease by enhancing the facilities of fresh water and improved sanitation for school-going children and slum communities.
Enhanced prevention, protection and solutions for disaster and climate-related displacement
- At-risk climate-affected communities and slum dwellers are prepared for future climatic shocks with risk-mitigation plans.
- At-risk climate-affected communities and slum dwellers are aware of safe migration through the development of knowledge, skills, and livelihood diversity.
- Actionable solutions for the protection and prevention of future displacement are piloted among at-risk climate-affected communities for protection and prevention of future displacement.

Project Brief:
The youth-led climate change project has been designed to engage the younger generations in climate change discussions, planning, and actions to better understand and address climate change issues. It aims to develop their knowledge and build their capacity so that the youth can further engage the community along with the local level duty bearers for reducing the climate change impact for a greener community. Moreover, the initiative enhances the capability and confidence of the youth for them to become more effective stakeholders and be able to express their unique concerns to their community, peers, and responsive authorities. To achieve the intended changes, A&Y will be firstly educated on climate change and the environment, subsequently, with this awareness, they will assess the environmental risks in their communities and develop an action plan to mitigate the risks within it while engaging the local government within the process. For sensitizing the community on the environment, an eco-model village will be developed by the members of the community with the support of the local government and the project demonstrate eco-friendly model activities, which will be replicated in other communities.
To capture the existing bad and good practices and alternative livelihood options within the community towards the environment, research will be conducted by an individual who has recently completed his/her master’s degree in environmental science or climate change.
This adolescent and youth-led project is being considered as a model and is expected to be replicated in the future for environmental reservation. Considering this aspect, the whole project will be documented by an external.
Beneficiaries:
Direct: 100 A&Ys at 03 communities in 03 districts will be directly oriented on climate change and environment. Through the peer learning process, 1100 A&Y living in the targeted location will gain knowledge on climate change and environmental issues. The project will orient a total of 60/65 farmers in each location, totaling to 200 farmers.
Indirect: Through this initiative of an eco-friendly model village, demo plot, and knowledge sharing at least 200 members of each community and a total of 600 community members will be benefited.

The project aims to boost the capacity of adolescents and youth (A&Y) by building skills and empowering them to increase civic engagement. It contributes towards facilitating smooth transition to adulthood through capitalizing their skills and exercising their rights to act as positive change agents of society. It also focuses on training them in market-oriented skills so that they can access employability and connect them to sustainable livelihoods and income generating opportunities, as well as strengthen their participation in community-improvement and decision-making processes. Overall, this project can contribute to the social transformation of the targeted disadvantaged communities in the river basin and coastal areas.

Project participants:
The direct target group of this project are 6,000 adolescents and youth, and among them 50% are girls and young women. The age range of the target groups is approx. 12 – 24 years. The indirect beneficiaries of this project are the children of the wider community, community peer groups of AY club members, their family members (16,000), local government representatives and service providers, job providers and government counterparts (160).

Strengthening community resilience to disaster through school safety initiative is a two-year (2021-2022) project has been being implemented since January 2021 in three sub-districts in the Shariatpur, Barisal, and Barguna districts in partnership with three Partner NGOs, namely SDS in Shariatpur, Saint-Bangladesh in Barisal and NSS in Barguna district. This project aims to children and adolescent in the under privileged communities’ exercises and enjoy their rights to safer education in their schools and protected environment in their community to disaster.
Overall Goal Of the project: Enhance community resilient through promoting comprehensive school safety initiative in the targeted river and costal districts in Bangladesh.
Project participants:
Project has primarily targeted secondary school’s students, education authority and their families living in most vulnerable location for flood, cyclone, and river erosion. General Objective: To contribute to the reduction of hazardous child labour in Bangladesh
Specific Objective: To protect children from hazardous child labour in the fish farming and processing sectors in the coastal areas of Bangladesh.
Project brief:
Education, an inalienable universal right, is key to eliminating child labor and breaking the cycle of poverty in which thousands of children in Bangladesh live. The project the aims to reduce hazardous forms of child labour, particularly within the dry fish processing and supply chain of shrimp and crab industries in the coastal region of Bangladesh. The project has been significantly contributing to protect children from hazardous works and to ensure their education and other rights and entitlements to enable a dignified life for them. The project aims to withdraw 800 child labourers from hazardous work through providing non-formal/formal education and technical training followed by decent job placement. The project is also working with children, parents, employers and community to sensitize them on hazardous works. Apart from that, the project has been advocating with local government and administration for proper implementation of child labour related laws and policies.
Beneficiary: 800 working children from hazardous fish farming and processing sector, 1,700 secondary duty bearers, 72 primary duty bearers and 5,500 indirect beneficiaries.
Location: Sadar Upazila of Cox’s Bazar district and Shyamnagar Upazila of Satkhira district in the coastal areas of Bangladesh.

Outcome:
- Child labour related laws, policies and regulations are improved, adopted and practiced at national level.
- Working children in hazardous works are withdrawn from hazardous work.
- Communities combat against child labour and exploitation especially hazardous labour.
Project brief:
The project has planned with children engaged in domestic works, transport sector, automobile workshop and scavenging in Dhaka city. Through the project, 100 working children are receiving primary education service through establishing one school at targeted community and 290 ODHIKAR phase-1 children are getting support and follow-up for smooth continuation of their education in different mainstream schools. The children will receive vocational training as part of their skill development to release themselves from hazardous jobs. The project is also working with the families of these children, as well as employers and community people to sensitize them against child labour. Apart from direct service delivery, the project has given emphasis on policy, advocacy, and networking to influence the national level agenda on child labour. Advocacy for improvement of relevant laws, policies and their implementation are a major component of the project.
Beneficiary: 390 working children from domestic works, transport sector, automobile workshop and scavenging, 780 families and 1,00,000 community people.
Location: 1 Community in Adabor Thana under Dhaka City Corporation.

Project brief:
ALOY ALOW Project is being implemented in Sreemangal and Kamolganj upazilas of the Moulvibazar district, under the Sylhet division. Project areas are lagging behind than the other areas of Bangladesh in most development indicators in the areas of health and education. The scenario is even worse in the tea garden and Haor areas. The tea gardens and Haors are marginalized areas where majority of the households remain in extreme poverty and exclusion. The tea garden/ hilly area populations are more likely to be day laborers. Project Brief: The project aims to contribute to safe, equitable and child-centered quality primary education in 60 primary schools in urban and peri-urban areas of Bangladesh. The project will contribute to increasing children’s participation and performance in learning competencies through improved co-curricular, cultural and sports activities. Pedagogic materials will be provided for the students of the schools involved, in order to facilitate the access of out-of-school children to formal education and improve the performance of students with learning difficulties. To improve basic learning skills, language and mathematics in the early grades, the learning reinforcement program on basic mathematics and language skills will be facilitated in the 60 primary schools.
In addition, initiatives will be carried out with children, teachers, parents, and members of the School Management Committee with the aim of developing skills to create a safe and violence-free learning environment in the school. In 2022, Educo will focus its program intervention through a Community Education Model (CEM), a pedagogical strategy to promote quality education with a community-based approach, in which families, children and adolescents, human resources, volunteers, teachers, community institutions are actively involved in the learning process, to achieve results and ensure completion of the educational cycle at the primary grade. The project also includes action strategies such as the creation of a school-based child protection Mechanism to promote child friendly school environment.

Brief of Project: Educo Bangladesh is initiating a two-year project in the remote areas of Bangladesh in partnership with three national organizations namely POPI, Sachetan Society and ESDO. The project has been designed to make greater impact towards the learner’s holistic improvement in an integrated way. The project will focus on the most disadvantaged communities including ethnic minority areas of Mymensingh, Rajshahi and Thakurgaon district of Bangladesh for the potential development of young (4-5 year aged) children for their smooth transition to the next stage of life cycle. The desired changes will be made in alignment with Vision 2021 of the Bangladesh Government, Education Policy 2010, 4th Primary Education Development Programme and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG4.2). This project covers 120 Preprimary classes under 120 Government Primary Schools, with 3,600 Preprimary children (boys-1750/girls1850) in 3 districts.

Adolescent and Youth (A&Y) empowerment initiatives will improve the living standards of these young people through facilitating life skills education and vocational training. The youth will become active citizens, be aware of their rights and have greater capacity and opportunity to contribute towards personal, communal and local development solutions. This young force will contribute to wider development by disseminating knowledge at the family and community level on rights awareness, gender harmony and environmental management. Selected adolescents and youth of A&Y clubs will be capacitated to act as a resource pool to roll out their learnings among the peers, schools and communities. The project will also create linkage or collaboration with relevant organizations to ensure required accommodation, health care, technical education, and employment support or to initiate reintegration process for the 32 Educo Shishu Nibash (ESN) beneficiaries.
Project participants
Approximately, 2032 adolescents and youth, whose age group is 12-24 years, will be benefited within the targeted communities of Dhaka and Mymensingh.

Broadly, adolescent input and participation will ensure a positive impact in every aspect so that their voice and their needs are integrated into project implementation. The project will generate evidence for further advocacy and sustainable social changes.

The direct target group of this project will be 4,000 adolescents and youth, with 50% girls and young women among them. It will cover 80 communities (clubs/agency) from the northern part of Bangladesh. The age range of the target groups is approx. 11 – 24 years. The indirect target beneficiaries of this project are children of wider community, community peer group of AYC members, their family members (6750), Local government representatives and service provider, job provider and Government counterparts (50).

Project Brief: The project aims to contribute towards the achievement of inclusive and equitable quality education in Government primary schools (GPS) through initiatives for increasing children’s participation and performance as well as contributing to a safe, joyful and protective environment. Through the project, joint initiatives with the govt. will be taken so that out of school children enjoy mainstreamed education. In addition, the project will strengthen capacity of teachers on child-entered teaching-learning process. Besides, cocurricular activities such as debate, art, creative work, sports, and cultural show will be organized to improve capacity and the potential of the children. Moreover, to boost reading habits among the children, school library initiatives will be promoted. Adequate pedagogic materials will be provided to the children for smooth learning. Additionally, to improve children’s reading and maths skills, extra support will be provided to the slower learners through learning camp. On the other hand, to promote a fear free and safe school environment, the project will strengthen school-based child protection system.

Project brief: Bangladesh is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. Nearly every year, the country faces more than one disaster event, events which are followed by a significant number of casualties. Considering this issue, EDUCO Bangladesh has had its Disaster Management Program in place since 2018 with the objective to protect the life of children and community people in disasters. The program is being implemented in three districts which are prone to common hazards such as fires, earthquakes, lightening, cyclones, nor ’westers and floods
Location: Barguna, Shariatpur, Barishal
Objective: Enhance community resilience through promoting comprehensive school safety initiatives in the targeted river and coastal districts in Bangladesh.
Expected Result:
- Children and adolescents in the most at-risk communities have access to safe and secure learning environment to minimize the impact of disasters on their right to quality education.
- Community is better prepared through enhancing youth and children engagement in DRR.
- Education authority and local government are initiated on several school safety initiatives in their community, including continuation of education in emergencies.

Project brief: The project aims at enhancing the understanding of child protection issues among children, adolescents, parents and caregivers in order to create efficient community-based child protection mechanisms and to identify and refer cases of abuse, neglect, violence and exploitation to the appropriate child protection service providers. In parallel this project will explore Community/homebased learning solutions for adolescent, aligned with Education sector quality standards. Teaching will focus academic content but will also include curricula actions to increase live saving and life sustaining skills and personal resilience of children and adolescents. The project will pilot a small-scale digital learning solution for the adolescent girls and boys in the Rohingya community. The project will ensure active participation of children and adolescents and community members including girls and women, through capacity building actions.

2,000 Rohingya children to be reached by the training of 118 teachers from 50 educational facilities in the Rohingya camps.

Approximately 800 adolescents (50% girl) aged 12-18 to be covered with adolescent groups capacity building activities and 460 adolescents (70% girl) through Child friendly Space, home based and digital learning interventions.

Goal: To contribute to the reduction of hazardous child labour in Bangladesh.
Location: Sadar Upazila of Cox’s Bazar district and Shyamnagar Upazila of Satkhira district in the coastal areas of Bangladesh.
Project brief: The project has been planned for two years, initiating from 2021 to 2022, with the aim to reduce hazardous forms of child labour, particularly within the dry fish processing and supply chain of shrimp and crab industries. The project will significantly contribute to protect children from hazardous works and to ensure their education and other rights and entitlements to enable a dignified life for them. The project aims to withdraw 500 child labourers from hazardous work through providing non-formal/formal education and technical training followed by decent job placement. The project will also work with children, parents, employers and community to sensitize them on hazardous works. Apart from that, the project will advocate with local and national government and administration for proper implementation of child labour related laws and policies.
Beneficiary: 500 working children from hazardous fish farming and processing sector, 1,700 secondary duty bearers, 72 primary duty bearers and 5,500 indirect beneficiaries.

Project brief:
The project is working with children engaged in domestic work and in the transport sector in Dhaka city. Through the project, 300 working children have received primary education in ODHIKAR schools at three targeted communities and are now in the process of mainstreaming. The children are receiving vocational training as part of their skill development to release themselves from hazardous jobs. The project is also working with the families of these children, as well as employers and community people to sensitize them against child labour. Apart from direct service delivery, the project has given emphasis on policy, advocacy and networking to influence the national level agenda on child labour. Advocacy for improvement of relevant laws, policies and their implementation is a major component of the project.
Beneficiary: 300 working children from domestic work and transport sector, 300 families and 75,000 community people.
